Opportunities Abound

National School Counseling Week is a time to celebrate our profession, but it also presents some outstanding opportunities to create a greater awareness of school counseling among the general public. For the past few years, ASCA has conducted a "tour" of radio stations and networks across the country. Last year, interviews with former ASCA president Brenda Melton were broadcast to almost 48 million listeners.

Today, ASCA School Counselor of the Year Tammi Mackeben will participate in live and taped interviews about school counseling in the 21st century and the challenges confronting school counselors and their students. Tammi knows a little about overcoming challenges. More than 95 percent of the students at her school are English language learners and receive free and reduced meals, yet her school has received the Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas (CREST) recognition from the Texas School Counselor Association as well as ASCA's Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) designation.

Tammi will do interviews on the American Urban Radio Network, Texas State Radio Network and USA Radio Network, which collectively represent almost 1,000 affiliate radio stations. Like last year, the radio tour is expected to reach millions of listeners. In addition, Tammi is preparing a podcast for Naviance, one the School Counselor of the Year sponsors. Her podcast will be posted on Monday at www.Naviance.com as the "Counselor's Podcast" in the "Community" section of the Web site. The podcast is open to the general public, and to listen, all you need is a computer with a speaker. These are great opportunities to spread the word about the many ways school counselors help students overcome barriers to learning so they can achieve success in school and beyond.

As another National School Counseling Week draws to an end, we also want to hear from you. Did you celebrate this week in a way that was unique, successful or just plain fun? Tell us about it in 200 words or less, and we'll share it with other school counseling professionals. Send your submissions to ASCA director of communications Kathleen Rakestraw (mailto:krakestraw@schoolcounselor.org). We look forward to hearing from you. We'd also like to read your comments on our blog, ASCA Attitudes.

By the way, we are already accepting nominations for the 2009 School Counselor of the Year. (http://www.schoolcounselor.org/content2.asp?contentid=544)

If you know an exemplary school counselor, I encourage you to submit a nomination. Better yet, encourage his or her principal or other administrator to submit a nomination to show off how great the school's counselor is.

Until next time, life is a journey, and although National School Counseling Week may
be a momentary stop, I hope its spirit will come alive every day of the trip.
